Hear from some of the key people who shaped and support Broomfield’s vibrant sports and recreation culture!
Broomfield is attractive to health and fitness focused people due to its extensive system of parks and trails and robust sports and recreation infrastructure. A big part of this is Broomfield’s strong youth and high school sports programming.
Moderator: John Long – A lifetime resident, athlete, and coach, John is a math teacher at Broomfield High School, and has been deeply involved in youth sports throughout his career, both at the high school and at the Broomfield Swim and Tennis Club.
Paul Derda – Mr. Broomfield and the namesake for the Paul Derda Recreation Center was the Director of Parks and Recreation from 1978 to 2002. Paul is known for numerous accomplishments including creating a park and playground within walking distance of every home in Broomfield and emceeing countless community events.
John Ferraro – Succeeded Paul as Director of Parks and held that role until 2011 retiring after nearly 36 years working practically every position in the Recreation Services department. His career has had far-reaching effects, including the establishment of Broomfield`s youth basketball program.
Tony Ferraro – John’s son has been active in youth sports and education throughout his career including coaching the Broomfield High Girls and Boys Golf Teams for more than a dozen years, succeeding his father in the role.
Dawn Rachjaibun – For more than 25 years, Dawn served as the Aquatics Program Manager for the City and County of Broomfield – transforming facilities, mentoring thousands, and championing safety and wellness across generations.
